“Of the (12) months, I am Margashirsha” Shri Krsna tells Arjuna at the dawn of the Kurukshetra war – Bhagvad Gita, ch.10. This Full Moon (FM, on 12/18) in Gemini in the nakshatra of Mrigashira (MS) marks the lunar month (in fact the midway point) of Margashirsha or Marghazi (Tamil). Bhagvad Gita describes this month as MahaVishnu himself, such is the creative potential of this month & this FM. Krishna gave darshan to Arjuna in his Vishwaroop (ultimate universal form) on the 11th waxing phase of this month. No wonder Krsna called the month of Margashirsha as He Himself
.
Mriga = deer, shira = head. MS is characterized by innocent curiosity or quest that helps transition the slow moving energy of Taurus (fixed Earth) to the fast, agile energy of Gemini. Moon in MS is reflecting the light of Sun directly opposite it in Sagittarius. Sankranti (Sun changing signs – from Scorpio to Sagittarius) occurred on 12/15; so the Sun is still very close to Gandanta (energetic knot) between Scorpio & Sagittarius, making the days leading upto the FM challenging in terms of energy drain or purge. Sun in Moola (Sagittarius) nakshatra reflecting its light on this FM is urging us to take a hard look at our unquestioned belief systems & societal norms – & purify them. Moon in Gemini is aiding us to connect with gentle curiosity to Soma, the deity of MS. Soma is another name for the overlord of Moon, Chandra. Soma also means elixir of immortality, juice of life, or substances that make you feel blissful (like fragrances). Chandra, the fickle minded deity, ultimately helps produce rasa (juice) with our deep connections (like with a beloved or god). These were also the conditions at Kurukshetra war: traditional dogmatic & political systems (Sagittarius) needed to be uprooted (Moola) & transformed (dual sign principle) which could only be achieved by Arjun’s innocent search (Mrigashira) for answers & curiosity (Gemini). Arjuna’s indecisive yet innocent open heart (Chandra) lead Krishna to give him the ultimate knowledge (& show him his Vishwaroopa) that removed all suffering (ecstasy; Soma)
.
What does this story mean for you? It means that you can become more like Arjun:
- Become aware of unjust or Adharmic systems in life
- Approach inner conflict with a gentle inquisitiveness
- Bring your genuine questions to the one you are devoted to (like Arjuna to Krishna)
- Be willing to surrender yourself fully (samarpan) in order to receive your answers. You never know what the Universe will show you (Arjun could have never anticipated seeing the Vishwaroopa)
- Be open to receiving the unknown (which may lead to further Soma)
Another story associated with MS is of Brahma wanting to fill the world with living beings (creation). In order to create, he needed to fornicate with his daughter, Rohini. Brahma’s innocent act was misunderstood by Rohini & she flees thro’ various realms taking different forms, while Brahma follows her, also taking a complimentary form. Rohini lands on Earth & transforms into a deer; Brahma does the same & catches upto Rohini. That’s why the energy of MS nakshatra feels indecisive like in between realms or a deer in headlights. There’s a tendency to move from one interest to the other quickly (snacking) w/o really letting the experience completely sink in. It’s like trying to read 5 books at one time w/o really finishing or relishing one. My advice this time around is simple:
- Focus on one thing from start to finish, even though it feels tempting to juggle multiple projects
- Cultivate genuine curiosity (like Arjun) & not assume things (like Rohini)
- Be aware of your environment at all times (like a deer), even the uncomfortable parts that we tend to brush under the carpet
- Instead of confronting or challenging systems, a tendency you may have experienced with all the Scorpio energy last week – ask the divine for answers with a loving open heart
- Do not assume you know it all. Be willing to receive the unknown – you may just be surprised by what you discover!
Love, Light & Blessings,
Malini
