Full Moon (FM) in Cancer spans across the starspaces of Pushya & Ashlesha. It will aid the energy of selfless nurturing of things that are dear to you – be it your pets, children, home, mother/parents, work, or a piece of art. But above all, it is time to nurture your own hearts. Pushya nakshatra is associated with selfless upbringing of Buddha (Mercury) by Brihaspati (Jupiter), even though Brihaspati wasn’t Buddha’s biological father. That level of selflessness requires one to connect deep into their hearts, into the infinite source of love. However, many fall into the trap of giving w/o really connecting to their fulfilled hearts. Yes! Fulfilled hearts. You can only selflessly give from a place of being full yourself, otherwise it creates resentment & martyrdom. So beware of your own tendency to feel resentful towards things that you have given love to – that’s the shadow side of Pushya. From this selfless, heart-centered outpouring, one is led into the gentle embrace of love in Ashlesha nakshatra. Again, if you are disconnected from the heart as the energies mature during this FM in Pushya, then as the Moon transits into Ashlesha, you may have the tendency to stifle those you love with a tight entangled grip (not an embrace) that controls & manipulates, rather than frees their love – rings a bell?

This FM is also celebrated as Thaipusam by Tamilians who are devotees of Lord Shiva across South Asia. Thai = solar month (do not confuse with solilunar month) of Makar or Capricorn – meaning Sun is in Capricorn, & Pusam = Pushya nakshatra – meaning Moon is in Pushya nakshatra opposite the Sun (most years). Another case & point to use sidereal zodiac. It is on this day when Parvati gave her eldest toddler, Murugan a Vel (spear) to defeat Surapadam, an asura residing in an ocean city who waged several wars against the gods. Murugan slays Surapadam, who had retreated in the form of a mango tree, from which a peacock emerges. This peacock then becomes Murugan’s chosen vehicle. This story also reminds us to not shove our own darkness & shadows under the rug, but rather embrace & integrate our shadow-side to become whole

Sun in Capricorn is also the energy of the father (Sun) in his son’s (Saturn) house; a son with whom the Sun didn’t get along well. So you may experience issues with authority figures or those holding power now. If you are an authority figure yourself (parent, boss, manager, teacher, politician etc), lean into the source of selfless love in your heart. If you are in the role of an apprentice (child, student, employee etc) dealing with dysfunctional authority try not to get into power struggles & be in state of acceptance of their limited capacity you witness – you cannot change people but you can change the circumstances when you have that power. With Jupiter’s one-way aspect on this FM, there’s more grace flowing that you allow yourself to perceive
