Happy Solstice. In the northern hemisphere, we are celebrating the return of sun to the north, meaning the Sun ends its southern journey & starts moving northwards for the next six months. This is also called Uttarayana. That’s correct Uttarayan doesnot occur on Makara Sankranti (Sankranti = ingress of Sun into a zodiac sign) but occurs very close to Dhanu Sankranti now when Sun is already in Sagittarius (Dhanu). This is due to an astronomical phenomenon that we can discuss some other time

.

Such is the importance of Uttarayan that Bhishma Pitamah from Mahabharata spent 51 days on a bed of arrows waiting for Uttarayan to finally leave his body. Up until winter solstice, the spirit’s journey is inwards but post-Uttarayan, it is conducive to bridge one’s internal Sadhana with that of the universe. Afterall, our ultimate connection to the frequencies of the universe is the Sun – think about it

.

The day after the solstice, we have the new moon (NM) in Mula nakshatra situated at the beginning of the Sagittarius. The Mula-Ardra axis (Mula in Sag & Ardra directly opposite in Gem) is where the plane of the Galaxy runs. NMs are also the times where there is an opportunity to purge our minds of the old & set new patterns. NM in Mula is especially is good for this where we are urged to rid ourselves of the poisons that hold us back – be it your diet, the media you consume, the people in your lives or the systems/organizations that you are a part of. If something doesn’t take you towards your highest potential, its time to rid yourself of it. Mars-retro aspecting this NM from Taurus (one way, 8th aspect) is infusing a sense of urgency to purge & transform, yet Venus & Mercury joined this NM are bringing in gentleness to this purification. Balancing a sense of urgency with a gentle touch is not easy but essential. Technically speaking, this NM right after the solstice should also be designated as the New Calendar Year. The New Year we all celebrate on Jan 1st every year, is an arbitrary time in space as it is not tied to any astronomical event. So, for those who also recognize the importance of this NM, wishing you a Happy New Year
